Alice

Alice is an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web. Alice is a freely available teaching tool designed to be a student's first exposure to object-oriented programming. It allows students to learn fundamental programming concepts in the context of creating animated movies and simple video games. In Alice, 3-D objects (e.g., people, animals, and vehicles) populate a virtual world and students create a program to animate the objects.

In Alice's interactive interface, students drag and drop graphic tiles to create a program, where the instructions correspond to standard statements in a production oriented programming language, such as Java, C++, and C#. Alice allows students to immediately see how their animation programs run, enabling them to easily understand the relationship between the programming statements and the behavior of objects in their animation. By manipulating the objects in their virtual world, students gain experience with all the programming constructs typically taught in an introductory programming course.

Why: For example, cutting out ads from a TV recording, or saving only a small part of a video you are interested in. How: Select a portion of the video with the mark A and mark B buttons, and either delete, copy, paste or save that part. If you do not reencode the video (that is, if the encoder is set to Copy), make sure all segments start with keyframes, or the resulting video will be broken at cut points. See the Cutting chapter for more details.
  • Encoding:
Why: You may want to convert the video to a different video format that your hardware or software players understands, or you just want to compress the video to a smaller size, for archiving or publishing it on the Internet. How: Encoding in Avidemux means selecting an encoder that does the video compression. That is, the drop-down menu on the left cannot be set to Copy. See the Main window chapter for more details.
  • Filtering:
Why: Basic filters applied to the picture like deinterlacing or resizing come in handy for various format conversions. Other filters may be used for adding subtitles to the picture, color correction etc. How: Filters require reencoding. So you have to select an encoder first, then you can add filters using the Filters button.

Apache Cordova

Apache Cordova is a set of device APIs that allow a mobile app developer to access native device function such as the camera or accelerometer from JavaScript. Combined with a UI framework such as jQuery Mobile or Dojo Mobile or Sencha Touch, this allows a smartphone app to be developed with just HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
When using the Cordova APIs, an app can be built without any native code (Java, Objective-C, etc) from the app developer. Instead, web technologies are used, and they are hosted in the app itself locally (generally not on a remote http server).
And because these JavaScript APIs are consistent across multiple device platforms and built on web standards, the app should be portable to other device platforms with minimal to no changes.
Apps using Cordova are still packaged as apps using the platform SDKs, and can be made available for installation from each device's app store.
Cordova provides a set of uniform JavaScript libraries that can be invoked, with device-specific native backing code for those JavaScript libraries. Cordova is available for the following platforms: iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone, Palm WebOS, Bada, and Symbian.

InstallForge

InstallForge combines high performance with usability and is therefore our first choice when it comes to creating fast and stable installation packages. A pretty and easy-to-use tool giving software developers the possibility to provide powerful setups.

Features :
  • Easy to use : The wizard-driven interface allows you to create your installation packages without scripting knowledge. All you need to do is to fill out the forms and attach the documents that you want the end-user to read.
  • Customizable user interface : InstallForge allows you to change setup graphics, display a splash-screen, add/remove dialogs and much more.
  • Multi-language support : InstallForge also allows you to create multi-language installation packages which enable end-users to choose a language they want to be used during the installation.
  • ZIP support : InstallForge uses the ZIP format for storing setup files. One significant feature is that every InstallForge setup can be opened/extracted with any data compression application supporting the ZIP format.
  • Visual Update Express support : InstallForge also supports Visual Update Express - a highly flexible update software which you may use in your own projects for free.

NSIS-Nullsoft Scriptable Install System

NSIS (Nullsoft Scriptable Install System) is a professional open source system to create Windows installers. It is designed to be as small and flexible as possible and is therefore very suitable for internet distribution. With NSIS we can create installers that are capable of doing everything that is needed to setup our software. NSIS is script-based and allows us to create the logic to handle even the most complex installation tasks. Many plug-ins and scripts are already available: we can create web installers, communicate with Windows and other software components, install or update shared components and more.

Features :
  • NSIS can create Windows installers that are capable of installing, uninstalling, setting system settings, extracting files, etc. Because NSIS is based on script files, you can create both simple and advanced installers.
  • Small overhead size : NSIS is created to be small, fast and efficient. While other installers often add hundreds of kilobytes or several megabytes to your installer data, a full-featured NSIS installer has an overhead of only 34 KB.
  • Compatible with all major Windows versions : You can create a single installer that is compatible with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Sever 2008 and Windows 7.
  • Unique compression methods : You can choose between three different integrated compression methods (ZLib, BZip2, LZMA). The new LZMA compression gives better results than any other common compression method. You don't have to use large self-extracting archive modules or other applications. The compression support is included in the 34 KB overhead.
  • Script based : Unlike other systems that can only generate installers based on a list of files and registry keys, NSIS has a powerful scripting language. This script language is designed for installers and has commands that help you to perform many installation tasks. You can easily add custom logic and handle different upgrades, version checks and more. For standard installers or as a starting point for more complex ones, you can use one of the available script generation tools.
  • Multiple languages in one installer : One installer can support multiple interface languages. More than 40 translations are already included, but you can also create your own language files. RTL (right-to-left) languages such as Arabic and Hebrew are fully supported.
  • Many features and checks for the target system : The script language provides commands you can use on the target system, from simple features like folder creation and registry editing to text/binary file modification, modification of environment variables and system reboots. Using provided plug-ins, you can even use Windows API.
  • Custom dialogs and interfaces : You can create custom wizard pages to get user input or integrate configuration options. NSIS includes a classic and modern wizard interface, but it is even possible to create your own custom interface.
  • Plug-in system : NSIS can be extended with plug-ins that can communicate with the installer. They can be written in C, C++, Delphi or another language and can be used to perform installation tasks or extend the installer interface. You can use the plug-in with a single line of script code. Plug-ins can also be compressed like other installation data and will only be included when you are using the provided features.
  • Support for web installation, file patching : The NSIS distribution includes a set of plug-ins that allow you to download files from the internet, make internet connections, patch existing files and more.
  • Project integration, different releases and automatic builds : The NSIS compiler features a powerful preprocessor. This allows you to easily integrate multiple projects into a single installer or automatically generate installer builds. You can also generate different releases such as lite and full versions.
  • Easy and human readable file formats : The NSIS script format and the format used for interface dialogs are easy, documented and humanly readable, so you can edit your files with your favorite editor. This also makes automatic script generation possible.
  • Portable Compiler : The NSIS compiler can be compiled for POSIX platforms like Linux and *BSD. Generated installer will still run on Windows only, but this way they can be generated without Windows or WINE.
